Entering China's competitive job market has become even more challenging due to the pandemic during graduation season. Sichuan Agricultural University took a variety of measures to ensure the employment of new graduates this year. Our reporter Zheng Songwu has more.
The number of China's new graduates in the 2022 graduation season surpassed ten million for the first time, with over 500 thousand in southwest China's Sichuan Province. Increased competition could mean it takes longer for graduates to start their careers.
ZHENG SONGWU Chengdu, Sichuan Province "The surging number of graduates and COVID-19 have made it more challenging for graduates to find jobs. Over 10 thousand students graduated from Sichuan Agricultural University this year, and nearly all of them have found jobs. We are at the university now to find out about their supportive policies."
We visited the enrollment and employment department of the university. The director told us that in addition to supporting students with disabilities or from poor families, the entire school was trying hard to help the graduates find jobs.
DU BIN Director, Enrollment and Employment Department of SAU "We always try to cooperate with companies or enterprises from eastern China such as Shanghai and the greater bay area, and the southwest region like Yunnan and Guizhou. The other was opening career guidance courses for all students. The guidance updates as students develop so they can learn different skills."
Gao Yuan was one of the graduates this year, majoring in international economics and trade.
GAO YUAN Graduate, College of Economics of SAU "The courses first urged us to know what we really want to do in the future. They also taught us many things such as interview skills, and the university would also hold mock interview contests to practice our skills."
Wu Xiaodie is a graduate of the College of Environmental Sciences. She recently started working at an engineering company in Chengdu.
WU XIAODIE Graduate, College of Environmental Sciences of SAU "The university would frequently update the employment web platform that is open for all graduates, and teachers also started WeChat groups for graduates, sharing job recruitment opportunities. This March, I found myself this job on a job-hunting platform which was working with our university."
The Department of Human Resources and Social Security of Sichuan also launched supportive policies for graduates. The policies include simplifying job-hunting procedures and opening 30 thousand public health-oriented jobs to medical students from rural areas.
